Vintage Seal Design San Blas Islands Applique Mola – 26187

A fun 6 3/4” tall applique mola crafted in the 1990s by the skilled needle artists of the San Blas Islands.

A cheerful seal!  With a black background, predominant colors are red, coral, yellow, green and violet. This is a traditional reverse applique piece with some embroidery. 

Molas - sometimes created as individual art pieces but more likely crafted as heavily appliquéd panels forming the front and back of a blouse - are the unique craft work of the indigenous Kuna people. 

Living primarily in Panama, the adjacent San Blas Islands and smaller villages in Colombia, the Kuna women are renowned for their fine embroidery, appliqué and multi-layer cut work as demonstrated in mola panels.  Depending on the number of fabric layers used to create the finished design, a mola can take between two and six weeks to complete...

This piece measures 6 3/4” tall, 7” wide and is ready to frame, stitch into a quilt, inset into a pillow cover or appliqué onto a denim jacket, purse or any other project you want to be truly one-of-a-kind.
