A fun 6 1/2” tall applique mola crafted in the 1990s by the skilled needle artists of the San Blas Islands.
Pretty puppy! With a lime green background, predominant colors are pink, maroon, orange, turquoise and yellow. This is a traditional reverse applique piece with some embroidery.
Molas - sometimes created as individual art pieces but more likely crafted as heavily appliquéd panels forming the front and back of a blouse - are the unique craft work of the indigenous Kuna people. Living primarily in Panama, the adjacent San Blas Islands and smaller villages in Colombia, the Kuna women are renowned for their fine embroidery, appliqué and multi-layer cut work as demonstrated in mola panels.
