A 2” diameter hand-coiled Mata Ortiz seed pot in a striking black-on-black contemporary dot design.

Seed pots were traditionally crafted to do what their name says; hold seed from one planting cycle to another.  Seeds were added to a pot crafted in part by the seed size – smaller for tiny grains, larger for the “Three Sisters” of squash, corn or beans – and then the holes on top were closed off with daubs of mud, sap or filled with a pebble or item similar in size.  This kept the seed dry and safe from insects and rodents until the next planting.

The talented potters of Mata Ortiz keep the tradition alive through the skills handed down over thousands of years from their ancestors in the Casas Grandes region.
